Channel Types

  • Public channels — Everyone in the organization can find and join them.
  • Private channels — Only invited members can view and join them.

Creating a New Channel

  1. Click the "+" icon next to the "Channels" section in the sidebar.
  2. Set a channel name — choose a clear name, for example: website-project, sales-team, general-announcements.
  3. Select the channel type: Public or Private.
  4. Add a description so everyone understands the channel's purpose.
  5. Invite members (optional) and click Create.

Using Channels

  • Send messages — Just like direct messages, but all channel members can see them.
  • Mentions (@mention) — Type @name to notify a specific person, or @all to notify everyone.
  • Attach files — Share documents and images directly in the channel.
  • Pin messages — Pin important information so everyone can easily find it.

Managing Channels

The channel creator or administrator can:

  • Add or remove members
  • Change the channel name and description
  • Switch a channel from public to private (and vice versa)
  • Archive a channel when it's no longer in use

Channel organization tips:

  • Each project should have its own channel.
  • Create a general-announcements channel for the entire company.
  • Create a channel for each department: hr-team, engineering-team, etc.
